About Remakes Part II: Movies I Would Like Being Remade

Among all these movies getting remakes, there is one, or better two movies, which I think would be a perfect remake now considering all of what happened to their franchises. Which two movies am I talking about? Surprisingly Alien vs Predator (2004) and its darker sequel Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (2007). Why these two? Let me explain. I don’t really like the idea of remaking older classics, but I am all for remaking bad movies with good ideas (Waterworld or Next) or movies that squandered their base material, such as Troy, The Last Airbender or Eragon. The Alien vs Predator franchise fits into both categories, they are terrible movies and they are based on material that has potential. So, let’s take a look at what should be done and why it should be done now.

Then you’ll know it’s the right time

Alien and Predator are currently in their lowest moments since the 1900s and the 2000s, thanks to movies like Prometheus, Alien: Covenant and The Predator, and the future for these franchises is uncertain at best (and also Fox acquisition by Disney). After Alien: Resurrection and Predator II, both of the iconic monsters got crossovers in Alien vs Predator and Aliens vs Predator: Requiem. The quality of these two movies isn’t great. What followed wasn’t much better. Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are better technically, but the screenwriting is at the same level and don’t get me started on The Predator. So, why an Alien vs Predator remake? Because it’s the right time to make one, the writers now know what to do and what not to.

What should it be?

What should this movie be like? Well, the answer is the first Predator and Aliens, the genre should be survival action horror. Just do what was done in Aliens and combine it with Predator. You get a mindless action horror at the very worst and that might not be so bad. One of the biggest mistakes in the previous Alien vs Predator movies was the setting on Earth in the present days, that was just a bad decision. Instead, Alien vs Predator should be set in the future on an alien planet or in a secret Weyland Yutani facility/space-station. The characters should be Marines like in Aliens in this potential remake, caught between the struggles of the two deadly alien species. I also came up with a list of my ideas and suggestions:

  1. Set it in the future on an alien planet or a base.

  2. Make no connection to Alien or Predator series, this movie shouldn’t deviate from the established canon.

  3. Focus on tension, horror, action and the characters.

  4. Mimic the atmosphere of Aliens and Predator.

  5. Enough with the Ellen Ripley rip-offs, let the protagonist be a male. I am sick of these Ripley copies.

  6. No super Xenomorphs or Predators, just a queen, a normal Predator and Xenomorphs. I don’t wanna see another Predalien, Newborn or Mega Predator.

  7. Use fan-service sparingly and correctly.

Final note

Alien and Predator series are in big trouble. People who brought these creatures to life now diminish them with poorly-written sequels and prequels, where they contradict everything what made these franchises enjoyable in the first place. What made them enjoyable and intriguing? Mystery, fear and the fact that humans are at the bottom of the food chain. I don’t know if there is going to be a sequel to Alien: Covenant maybe, maybe not. Predator is in a much worse state than ever before and I am gonna call it’s going to take another 10 years before a next Predator movie is getting another shot. The Alien vs Predator remake would potentially keep both of the franchises alive and perhaps pave the way for new movies to come. I don’t know if this is the best idea, but I think that Alien vs Predator deserves another chance. There are plenty of great comics and novels about Xenomorph fighting Predator and humans caught in between, I am sure there is material for a great movie.

Until then keep watching Predator and Aliens!
