Borat character created and portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen is nothing short of an international icon. The movie of the same name (or Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan) from 2006 is considered a cult classic and one of the best modern comedies. The greatest part besides of satirical tone and crude jokes is the fact that Sacha Baron Cohen was interacting as a character pretending to not know the American customs. Everyday Americans believed that he was a foreign reporter and there for often relieved something more about themselves. Knowing that it was hard to make a sequel to this, because the main point is now virtually impossible, Borat is internationally famous and so is Sacha Baron Cohen. Or so I thought, because Cohen secretly filmed a sequel, that was released on October 23rd, 2020 on Amazon. So, let’s find out how this movie turned out and if it is as good as the first one.
Brilliant and perfectly timed
To my surprise this movie works as good as the original, in many ways it even surpasses it. The synopsis is pretty simple: After the events of the first movie Borat Sagdiyev is sent to gulag for embarrassing his nation, after 14 years he is released to deliver a gift to Donald Trump in an attempt to redeem his nation.
Borat once again interacts with everyday Americans, but because he knows he is famous, he often has to use disguise to mask his real appearance. This leads to really great comedic moments. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is superbly written comedy and satire of modern USA. In my opinion the most important movie of 2020, because it perfectly understands this year’s issues, politics, conspiracies and atmosphere. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is pretty much something like “2020 the movie”.
Sagdiyevs vs United States
There is another aspect of this movie I didn’t expected and that is the surprisingly very touching father-daughter story. Maria Bakalova plays Borat’s daughter Tutar and she is as good as Cohen. She also works as “Borat” interacting with unsuspecting Americans.
Interactions with everyday Americans are as genius as in the first movie and there are scenes where I don’t know if attendees are on it or not. Scene everyone is talking about these days and probably will be for a very long time is the one with Rudy Giuliani. But there are other scenes of comedic brilliance and writing.
Living up to the first movie
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is a movie that surpassed my expectations and provided very much needed comedy in this year. Is it as funny as the first movie? Yes and no, the first movie worked because of the edgy humor and shock factor, this movie works better as a political satire. There are some small problems with the movie, like that sometimes the gags feel a bit staged and there are multiple cuts and camera angles. Still this is a really great movie and I give this movie a solid 8/10.
Until than keep watching Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan!
